Over the last two weeks we have worked to create a storyboard and short video of a public service announcement. The purpose of this task was to develop our technical skills in creating and producing a powerful ad which familiarizing ourselves with media literacy tools. As a group we decided that our idea should be "pay it forward" with kind gestures. Especially in these stressful last few weeks of class all students could benefit from a kind gesture. This public service announcement has a great message and a very sweet ending. Take a look!
Technology in the classroom is making the process of learning more accessible, and engaging. As well, technology can enhance communication between parents and students. I have attached my response to the question "How should teachers approach technology in the elementary setting? Why?" Technology in the classroom provides many opportunities for the teacher and the students. It is something we should happily embrace for the reasons I have listed in my response... This response was written for my media literacy class. Check it out! Ladies and Gentlemen...
HAVE YOU VOTED? Today is the federal election. What an exciting time for our Country. I hope you all exercise your right to vote. I will not advocate for one party over another, as we all have personal priorities. Regardless of WHO you vote for, it is an important part of being a responsible Canadian citizen. While most people in this area will have time to tune into the Jays game tonight, I hope you spare some time to go and vote. I developed an appreciation of democracy because of my parents. They have always exercised their right to vote! This the second federal election I have voted in. I volunteer with my mom who is a grade 5 teacher. She has taken the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of Canadian citizenship and democracy over the past few weeks in her class. It has been amazing to see the curiosity of the students and passion towards this election. It will be exciting to see the results tonight! ... of both the game and the election! (Go Jays!) I took a quiz to determine how I feel about technology in the classroom in collaboration with student learning and success. At the end of the quiz it was determined that I am a "Spirit Guide" for students. According to the quiz this means that "You are dedicated to students' social and emotional well-being and understand that media is one crucial facet of their identity and sense of self-worth" (Powerful Voices for Kids). It is evident that I demonstrate a holistic approach to education where students well-beings are essential to the successful classroom environment.
Technology is a powerful tool in the classroom, in that many opportunities exist when it is utilized properly. Media is an engrained part of the 21st century. We are teaching students who are knowledgeable and comfortable with technology. Media is used in many of their everyday lives for leisure. A successful blend of education with personal use can foster a deeper appreciation of learning. Being mindful of students technological use and practices will help me to monitor their well-being. From here, I would like to move forward and focus my energies on the content of the media literacy rather then the practices and the emotions of the students. I do believe making an effort to monitor and guide the students is essential, however, the content I aim to teach is equally important. For more information, or to gauge your own practices take the quiz! |
